2010 Oklahoma Breath of Life Workshop
Thank you to the participants and instructors who helped make our Breath of Life workshop a success!
The Department of Native American Languages hosted a Breath of Life Workshop from May 24 through May 28, 2010.
Created for those who wish to revive languages that have no fluent first language speakers, the Breath of Life Workshop covered topics including language use in the home and community, figuring out grammar, and methods of archives research. The workshop was held primarily at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, and included field trips to the Western History Collection at the University of Oklahoma and to the Oklahoma Historical Society.
Participants represented the Natchez, Osage, Otoe, and Wichita languages, and were grouped with a student or faculty mentor from universities across the nation.
Workshop instructors included:
- Daryl Baldwin (The Myaamia Project and Miami University, Ohio)
- Tracy Hirata-Edds (University of Kansas)
- Colleen Fitzgerald (University of Texas at Arlington)
- Mary Linn (Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and Department of Anthropology, University of Oklahoma)
