Cretaceous 144 to 65 million years ago During the Cretaceous time period, Oklahoma was located close to its current position on the Earth. A great inland sea extended from Texas to Canada through Oklahoma and parts of the state were under water. Clams, cephalopods and snails were the most abundant invertebrate animals that lived in this sea. Vertebrate animals, including sea reptiles such as Plesiosaurs and Mosasaurs also lived in this sea. Dinosaurs lived on nearby land. These vertebrate animals are rare in Oklahoma. Cretaceous land plants are also rare in Oklahoma. You can find fossils of Cretaceous age in limestone, shales and sandstones of southern Oklahoma. |
