Mississippian 323 to 354 million years ago During the Mississippian time period, Oklahoma was located south of the equator and was mostly covered with shallow sea. The dry land mass north and east of Oklahoma continued to grow larger and some areas of the state were briefly above sea level. The most abundant invertebrate animals that lived in this sea were brachiopods and corals and crinoids, with clams and snails present. Trilobites had become by the Mississippian. Fossils of land plants including leaf impressions have been found, but are also rare in the Mississippian. [anything to add about vertebrates?] You can find fossils of Mississippian age in limestones and shales of the Arbuckle Mountains and in parts of eastern Oklahoma. |
