Silurian 412 to 443 million years ago During this time, Oklahoma drifted farther to the south of the equator and continued to be covered by a shallow sea. The nearest land was located north and east of Oklahoma. The most common invertebrate animals living in this sea included brachiopods, trilobites and corals, although clams and snails were also present. Stromatolites became less common during these times. More complex fishes with teeth appeared in the Silurian and a few invertebrates (relatives of spiders) were living on land by the end of the period. You can find fossils of Silurian age in limestones of the Arbuckle Mountains of south-central Oklahoma and in some areas of eastern Oklahoma. |
