The Department of Native American Languages is excited to offer our second video workshop for high school Native language students!
The workshop will teach students how to use a digital video camera and external microphones, and how to use Final Cut Express software for video editing. The immediate goal of the workshop is for students to work in groups to create a 10 minute video; our ultimate goal is to inspire students to become filmmakers, and give them the tools with which to document their languages and cultures.
There are four total sessions of the workshop. The first two will consist of instruction in equipment use and in beginning a project; students will have a week to work on their project and then will return for a third and fourth session in editing. We will also have a screening of students' film projects in the Kerr Auditorium at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, which will be open to students' families, friends, and/or community members.
Dates for the workshop are:
- Friday, June 5, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm: Introducing filmmaking, learning to use audiovisual equipment
- Saturday, June 6, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm: Begin small video project, introduction to editing
- Friday, June 12, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm: Editing work, viewing small project, outlining larger project
- Saturday, June 13, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm: Continuation of editing work
- Saturday, June 20: Film screening of final projects
PLEASE NOTE: Attendance at all four instructional sessions of the workshop is required for participating groups.
We are offering this training free of charge in the form of a scholarship to 4 groups of 3-5 students. Each group must be accompanied by at least one adult chaperone, who may be a teacher, parent, elder, etc. If you wish to apply for the video workshop, your group must complete a scholarship application and submit it to us no later than May 15. You can download the application via the link at the right of this page. Applications may be mailed to: Native American Languages, Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, 2401 Chautauqua Avenue, Norman OK 73072. They may also be submitted via fax (405-325-7699) or email.
If your group is selected to participate in the workshop, you will receive the following:
- Access to a video kit with all necessary audiovisual equipment (digital video camera, microphones, and Macintosh laptops with audiovisual editing software), which will be provided for each group of students to check out for the duration of the workshop;
- Breakfast, lunch, and snacks for students and chaperones on June 5, 6, 12, and 13; and
- Overnight accommodations if necessary, depending on the distance that your group has to travel. (Additional funds may be available to assist with travel costs.)
The workshop will be hosted at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. It will be taught by Kristin Dowell, a new faculty member in the OU Department of Anthropology who works with Native filmmakers; Mike McCarty, the Audiovisual Specialist at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History; Mary Linn, the Associate Curator for Native American Languages at the Sam Noble Museum; and OU graduate students. We are also pleased to welcome Sterlin Harjo, who will speak to workshop participants on his experience as a Native filmmaker.
